A professional upholstery cleaning resets your furniture to a genuinely clean baseline. How long it stays that way depends almost entirely on what you do — and don’t do — between professional visits. The good news is that maintaining upholstery well doesn’t require much time or equipment. It mostly requires knowing what actually helps and avoiding a few common mistakes that make things worse.

The Basics That Apply to Every Fabric

    Vacuum regularly — but correctly

Vacuuming is the single most effective maintenance step between professional cleans. It removes loose surface debris, pet hair, and dry particles before they work their way deeper into the fabric.

Use the upholstery attachment on a low suction setting. Work in the direction of the fabric pile, not against it. Pay extra attention to seams, tufting, and the back and sides of cushions where debris accumulates but isn’t visible.

For most households, vacuuming upholstery every 1 to 2 weeks is sufficient. Pet households benefit from more frequent attention.

    Rotate and flip cushions

Reversible cushions should be flipped and rotated regularly — ideally every few weeks. This distributes wear evenly, prevents permanent compression of one side, and reduces the concentration of body oils and soiling in a single area. Cushions that are never rotated wear unevenly and soil faster on the contact side.

    Deal with spills immediately

The first 30 seconds after a spill determine whether it becomes a stain. The basic rule: blot, don’t rub. Use a clean white cloth and work from the outside of the spill inward to prevent spreading. Apply minimal pressure and let the cloth absorb the liquid rather than pushing it deeper into the fabric.

For most fresh spills on synthetic fabrics, cold water on a clean cloth is the safest first step. Avoid hot water, which can set some stains. Avoid rubbing, which spreads the spill and damages fabric pile. And avoid applying cleaning products before you know what your fabric can handle.

    Keep pets off when possible

If pets regularly sleep on upholstered furniture, using washable throws or blankets over the contact areas dramatically reduces the rate of dander, oil, and hair buildup in the fabric. Wash those covers regularly rather than letting the contamination accumulate.

    Fabric-Specific Maintenance

    Microfiber

Microfiber is one of the more forgiving upholstery fabrics for maintenance. Most microfiber can be spot-cleaned with distilled water and a clean white cloth for fresh spills. Avoid overwetting. A soft-bristled brush used gently after cleaning helps restore the texture.

    Velvet

Velvet requires more care than most fabrics. Never rub velvet — always brush in the direction of the pile with a soft velvet brush. For loose debris, use a lint roller rather than vacuuming directly on the pile. Avoid moisture where possible. Any significant cleaning should be left to a professional.

    Leather and faux leather

Wipe leather regularly with a slightly damp clean cloth to remove surface dust and oils. Use a dedicated leather conditioner every 6 to 12 months to prevent drying and cracking. Avoid harsh cleaners, solvents, and excessive moisture. Faux leather is more forgiving but still benefits from the same gentle approach.

    Linen and natural fibres

Natural fibres are more sensitive to moisture than synthetics. For fresh spills, blot immediately and allow to air dry fully before sitting on the piece again. Avoid excessive rubbing. For anything beyond fresh spills, professional cleaning is the safest option.

What to Avoid Regardless of Fabric Type

          Rubbing stains — always blot.

Using undiluted cleaning products — always test in an inconspicuous area first.

Over-wetting — excess moisture can damage cushion fill and cause mould.

Steam cleaners on delicate fabrics like velvet or silk — the heat and moisture can cause permanent damage.

Leaving wet spills to dry without blotting — the liquid wicks outward and downward, spreading the contamination area.

    When to Call a Professional

Home maintenance between cleans handles surface buildup. Professional upholstery cleaning handles what maintenance can’t — deep-seated soiling, embedded allergens, pet contamination, and odours that have penetrated into cushion fill.

For most households, professional upholstery cleaning every 12 to 18 months is appropriate. Pet households and those with allergy sufferers benefit from cleaning every 6 to 12 months.
